Yep, Brian turned 5 (and several somersaults) this year. He wanted to have a birthday party, so we invited a bunch of his friends over for cake, ice cream and balloon animals. Everyone had fun, no one cried, and the carpet remained reasonably clean. The perfect party!

I put together an invitation... ...folding it up into an origami for the kids to unfold.

Later, we had a family party.

We really have to do something about all these birthdays in the spring and summer. Calvin on April 9...Brian on June 1...Michelle on July 14...and Yoko on August 27.... That's way too much birthday cake for Steve's diet! Maybe next year, while everyone else scarfs chocolate cake, I'll nibble tofu cake.

Brian started his second year at Yochien (kindergarten) this year. The first week he was lunch toban (monitor).

He also dressed up in yukata (summer robe) and danced for the school's music performance.

Brian is still taking gymnastics at the gym across the park. I'm just guessing here, but I don't think this particular exercise is part of the course.
